The Hands

“And it was the touch of the imperfect upon the would-be perfect that gave the sweetness,
because it was that which gave the humanity.”

Tess of the d’Urbervilles – Thomas Hardy, 1891

Some say you can learn a lot about someone through their hands, most interesting to me is what they reveal is going through our heads.

During a wedding day I try to act as discretely as possible, to sink into the background, which allows me to see and document the day in a way I find most appropriate, interesting & challenging. It’s this approach which allows me to see the smaller moments which fit together to show the story behind each day. Sometimes people can be so focused on getting exact photographs that they pre-visualise, capturing the very essence of the day can be tarnished, or even lost completely… which is a great shame!

The different emotions that ebb and flow can make a morning session particularly interesting. This weeks photo shows us that amongst the excitement often lies a small amount of anxiety, thinking ahead to the day that’s planned.  The vacant gaze as she pictures the the various details that had been pondered for months, juxtaposed against the clutter, emphasising the collision of thoughts. The Hands show the mild tension, contemplative thought. It’s the use of the wide angle that has allowed me to find and compose this metaphor, allowing me to bring in some of the details of the venue as well.

I hate repeating images, anything that looks “stock” is somehow lost on me. Moments like this are totally unique, personal, non repeatable.
