Observations

Do you still enjoy photography, or take your own photographs?

Short answer: More than ever!

Less short answer: It’s something that clients and friends ask me from time to time, and I think the idea is that we all take photographs, and because I (possibly) do it more often than other people, and for other people, that might somehow lessen the interest or enjoyment for me on a personal level. Which is a perfectly reasonable idea, right?

What I’ve found is the more people I meet, the more places I visit, the more I learn – the more my love for photography grows.

Genuinely.

I see others so openly and willing to share and immerse themselves with others – that it inspires me in my own life.

And I think life and photography go hand in hand.

I make the clear distinction between the two, as for me it’s an infrequent observation of how I see the world and my self passing through it. If it ever became a yearning to record every second in front of my eyes, I would know the very meaning of what those photos could then become would be almost entirely lost.

So that’s where I’m at. I don’t take many, but what I do take fit neatly into a part of me.

“Good enough” isn’t good enough.

I didn’t feel like I could share a few images with you without showing you what I think is an essential part of my personal photos. As this may turn out to be an unpopular opinion, but I think unless you’re actively printing your personal photos, you will regret it in the long run. It’s been said before, but the idea that we can all just do the very minimum or follow the latest trends when it comes to our own family and social history isn’t good enough.

That may sound slightly brutal but I only speak from my heart.

Wouldn’t it be nice to look back at some of your memories the same way you do with images from your childhood? That family day at the beach playing in the waves? Because that generation may not have had the highest megapixel count, or the convenience of facebook & instagram…

But they left a physical reminder behind for us – a print.

So give it a try! Print 10 images at the end of each month. Of people, events, anything you like.

They don’t have to be grand gestures or beautifully lit – just significant to you for one reason or another.
